This place is remote. It takes a lot of time to get here. You are far from any services, go prepared. The closest inhabited area is Cougar at the foot of the mountain. There is not much in Cougar. There are not a lot of visitors. The facilities are Forest Service primitive. It is an opportunity to view Mt. St. Helens from a less visited side. The lahar scar is the prominent visual.
Great "interpretive" area, as I would call it. A bit of hiking through a railed walkway and a suspension bridge. Took my baby on my back, in the carrier, in about 6" of snow and had a wonderful time. Watch your little ones and I recommend no pets (I believe they were not allowed possibly) as the signs are true - people have died from falling into the current or down a cliff face, so match your crew close!
Awesome short little trail, you can see the lava flow and the hollow spots which is very neat. You can even crawl through one of the tunnels if you dare..
I'd never been to this trail. We couldn't take our field trip 6th graders very far, but the trail was well marked and easy to walk. Would have loved to go further!! I plan to return. What amazing history.
Lava Canyon is one of those viewpoints worth the drive, just about any drive. Beyond being in a spectacular park, the place offers up an incredible view with waterfalls, an intense suspension bridge, and of course a lava rock canyon. Bit of a drive, don't expect any facilities beyond some dated pit toilets (so bring water + snacks) but totally worth it. Nice views of Mount St. Helens on the way there / back too.
